The Zambia Water and Sanitation Project consists of rehabilitating and expanding water and wastewater services of Mulonga Water & Sewerage Company (MWSC) in the Copperbelt Province, Zambia’s traditional copper mining region bordering on the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Company is one of the 11 public Commercial Utilities (CUs) that provides water and wastewater services in urban and peri-urban areas in Zambia. MWSC is wholly owned by the municipalities of Mufulira, Chingola and Chililabombwe in equal measure. MWSC is responsible for the service provision to approx. 500,000 people in the three urban areas. MWSC has a total of roughly 50,000 water connection customers as of December 2014. The high population growth in the peri-urban areas as well as lack of major investments in physical infrastructure have limited its ability to provide adequate water supply and sanitation services to the fast growing urban residential areas.
