Project background:
The Kitchener Drain is one of the highest polluted drains in the Delta region, collecting domestic wastewater (insufficiently treated & untreated) from numerous villages within the 3 governorates and industrial wastewater discharged from industrial activities, as well as municipal solid waste disposed of along the banks of drains. The population in the project area is mostly rural and totals at ~6 million capita of which nearly half (46%) does not have access to sewerage services at the moment. Currently, a large part of the polluted water from the Kitchener Drain is used for irrigation purposes, causing environmental and health problems and severely damaging the agricultural economy of the area.
The Kitchener Drain project is the first phase of a larger investment programme aiming at the depollution of the Kitchener Drain through investments in wastewater collection & treatment, management of solid waste, and rehabilitation of the drain infrastructure. It will improve the living standards of the rural population in the catchment area of the Kitchener Drain, improve public health and environmental conditions and enhance agricultural economic activities in the area.
